The 36 hole gross Club Championship took place on Saturday 9th of September, although there was doubt about it being played at all due to the extreme wet weather.

At 7 am the course was deemed unfit to play, as the greens were flooded, and it was still raining. It was decided to delay play for the club Championship which was due to start at 8am, and see if conditions changed, fortunately after about an hours delay the rained stopped for a while, and thanks to volunteers Daz and Jim Horner, we were able to clear the greens of standing water, allowing play to commence , there were several delays during the first round as the greens were cleared of water, however the first round was completed successfully.
Lunch was taken by the players , thank you to a Dawn and her team for providing a great ‘themed’ menu. The second round started with Stuart Atkinson , Craig Darbyshire Ben Crowther, and Fergus Barron being in the leading group. The afternoon round was played in much better conditions, and despite a few showers, again thanks to volunteers, Daz, and Steve Dent ,we again kept the greens clear and putting well. The leading players went out last in the final round, with only one shot separating them, with Fergus out in the group in front ,only two shots away, towards the end of the round Stuart Atkinson had established a lead over Ben Crowther, with Craig Darbyshire unable to repeat his morning round ,unfortunately, falling away, and Fergus Barron finishing with a final round of 75 , and a total of 148 securing 3rd place in the Championship. This left Stuart Atkinson and Ben Crowther on the course battling for the title.
On the 16th tee Stuart was holding a two shot lead overall over Ben , both having played some excellent golf all day in very testing conditions. Stuart’s tee shot on 16 was extremely unfortunate to land in an almost impossible position in the small conifers to the right of the green, and only being able to play out leaving another near impossible position, the 16th ended in a three shot swing , with Ben now taking a one shot lead to the 17th tee, both players took comfortable pars, leaving Ben still with just that one shot lead playing the 36th hole.
With the pin being back middle position it was vital that the tee shots got onto the top tier, Ben playing first hit a good shot and finished comfortably pin high to the right, Stuart played an excellent shot tee shot, straight over the flag, however it span back ,narrowly missing the hole, leaving about a 12 foot uphill putt. Ben putted first across the green , the ball breaking left finishing 3 foot away, with Ben marking his ball , Stuart had the uphill putt for a birdie and to at least force a sudden death play off, the putt was on line but just finished agonising a couple of inches short, this left Ben with a putt to win , he proceed to strike it confidently into the cup, to take the Club Championship by one shot, after a tense and dramatic final few holes. Congratulations to Ben on becoming the 3rd George Sargent Club Champion.

My final thoughts of the day, I want to thanks my three volunteers, Daz, Jim and Steve, without them the Championship would not have taken place,I want to thank all the players for taking part in particularly poor weather conditions. Next year a 36 hole nett prize will be introduced running alongside the main scratch prizes.
